Getting Started at Aikido of Madison

Detailed here is our introductory procedure for Adults and teens. For kids aged 5-12, please see our youth program introduction.

Step 1: Observe

We request that anyone interested in exploring Aikido come and observe a class.

Here are some tips:

  • Observe an appropriate class. The All Levels classes on Monday/Wednesday (morning or evening), Tues/Thurs (noon), or Friday (7:15-8:15pm) are particularly suitable as they are most like what you will experience as a new student.
  • Someone will come speak to you and tell you a bit about what you are seeing. They will check back either before or at the end of class, so feel free to ask questions.
  • Be aware that all Aikido classes are tailored to the level of the students who are there. If the class you observe has no true beginners, you may not see truly introductory material. Don't be intimidated! Any class that you participate in will be adjusted to include you.
  • You're welcome to observe as many classes as you wish.

Step 2: Try

We do not offer a free trial class simply because we do not feel that a single class can tell you much about what is for most people a lifelong pursuit. If you do decide to give Aikido a try, we ask that you pay a month's dues (which we will pro-rate if you start mid-month), at which point you can attend any basics classes you wish. We have classes morning, noon, and evening to accommodate a wide range of schedules.

Things to know:

  • Come a bit early and introduce yourself to the instructor or someone who knows what's going on. They'll make sure you are taken care of.
  • It is helpful but not necessary to have printed and filled out the registration form(s) ahead of time, but if you have not done so copies will be available at the dojo.
  • You do not need to have a uniform. Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move easily. Long pants or leggings are preferred over shorts. We generally train barefoot on the canvas mat.
  • There will be many things that you do not understand or know how to do. Keep an open mind and do your best.
  • In the tradition of Aikido, there is only one teacher on the mat and they will give you instructions. Your fellow students are eager to help you in important but more subtle ways, so pay close attention to what they are doing with their bodies. They're giving you clues. Listening to your body and trusting what it tells you is a big part of Aikido and a valuable skill in life.

Step 3: Join

If you'd like to continue training, you will be set up with a user ID for this website, where you can manage your membership dues on an ongoing basis, including auto-payment if you wish.

A few important notes:

  • Most of our communication within the dojo community is via an email list (Google group). Your registration form will have details on how to get signed up.
  • There is an additional once-yearly membership fee (currently $15) which helps to cover insurance. It will be payable at this time.
  • We do not offer or require long-term contracts. Student dues are strictly month-to-month. If you are gone for a month or for some other reason will not be training, you can pause your dues at any time. Your yearly membership fee will cover you for the rest of the calendar year.
